The Child's World: assessing children in need
EveryChild Ukraine has held its third training session for specialists from Kyiv region in June 25-26, 2008 on “Assessment of children’s and families’ needs. Procedures and techniques of assessment and individual planning” in terms of “Promotion of Integrated Model of Social Services for Vulnerable Families and Children in Kyiv Oblast” project. Professionals involved in the assessment of children in need were invited to share their opinion about new methodology.
The meeting became the next important step in approbation of assessment of children and families in need methodology in local Ukrainian context.
Moreover, it became a point of departure for further comprehensive discussion on recent developments in research and practice at the policy framework for assessment, the actual process of assessment, how to assess the developmental needs of children and how to assess their parents' and family's capacity to meet those needs.
Key topics covered included: practical work with the client, how to use diagnostic communication, how to build consultation process effectively, lessons learnt from foreign experience in social work and assessing children’s needs, working with analysisis of information, data gathering and individual planning.
During the event “The Child's World” training resource for professionals involving in the assessment of children in need and their families was used. The video footage consisted of two parts: part 1: Six trigger scenarios address different aspects of parenting stress or difficulty and part 2: My experience of assessment, - the words of children who have had experience of assessments are spoken by volunteers, including disabled young people.The Child's World was originally developed by the NSPCC and the University of Sheffield following the publication of the Framework for the assessment of children in need and their families. The Assessment Framework is now integrated into Working together to safeguard children: a guide to inter-agency working to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.
The training was designed to facilitate productive joint work between EveryChild and local partners and was developed by training manager of EveryChild Ukraine Rostalna Mariya
