Today, on the UN International Day of the Family (Friday), international development charity EveryChild is warning that the global recession is leading to more children being abandoned, trafficked and exploited across the world. As food becomes scarcer, parents face unemployment and families become desperate, children are leaving their homes and schools to find work. Some children are migrating away from families, some are trafficked and many are abandoned into orphanages. At the same time governments are cutting their already limited support for child care and child protection services. -

Getting and holding attention in training sessions is a challenge, even for good trainers. EveryChild Ukraine in co-operation with partner organization - Institute for Human Services (USA) launched a Programme of training of trainers in social work for families with children in terms of the project "Preventing Separation of Children through Implementation of Gate-keeping Mechanism". Training Curricula and training modules for trainers in social work for families with children are developed as for local trainers, as for trainers and specialists from other organizations and regions in Ukraine. -

The series of one-day trainings called "Development of local programs for family support and reform of institutional care based on strategic planning and gate-keeping mechanism" within the project "Prevention of Separation of Children and Families through Implementation of Gate-Keeping in Ukraine", carried out by EveryChild Ukraine took place in April in Fastiv, Vyshgorod and Brovary (Kyiv region). -

EveryChild Ukraine wins two awards for prevention of child abandonment campaign
Prevention of child abandonment information campaign "Want to meet..." implemented by EveryChild Ukraine together with Kyiv regional center for social services for family, children and youth was among winners at the International Festival of Advertising "White Square", taking home two trophies as winners from the campaign category were announced. -

Swedish member of Parliament makes a deeper insight into childcare system in Ukraine
On 22nd of April EveryChild Ukraine had a meeting with Ms. Agneta Berliner - member of Liberal People's Party of the Swedish Parliament, who recently visited Ukraine to witness country's efforts in reformation of childcare system. -

EveryChild has won another victory in the battle to keep children out of children's homes in Ukraine. Partly thanks to a campaign run by EveryChild, the Ukrainian government has changed the law so that all possible options will be explored before a child is placed in a children's home. -

Ukrainian baby boom The demographic situation has returned to its early 1990s levels
President Viktor Yushchenko is an easy target these days, but one should admit that, unlike his predecessors, during his incumbency he has shown sincere care for the problems of the family, maternity, and children. Clearly, a reason for this was not merely the country's dangerous demographic situation, but personal motives as well: it is no secret that the head of state has five children. -

Kyiv State Art Gallery "Lavra" in cooperation with EveryChild Ukraine will be hosting a charitable photo exhibition dedicated to the right of every child to have a family. Selected images will be exhibited in the gallery in terms of the 10th anniversary of EveryChild's activities in Ukraine during 28th of February - 1st of March 2009. There are also plans for a traveling exhibition. -

The meeting of the Coordination Council on Childhood Protection was held in Kyiv Regional State administration on 17th of February. The Council which is headed by the Deputy Head of Kyiv State Administrartion, met to discuss mechanisms to coordinate efforts and variable resources between members of the Council, in order to protect children from various violations of their rights. -
